breath.

With the birth of spring on March 20, the fashion and retail world greeted the warmer Toronto weather with open arms. People are shaking off the winter coats and donning new trends for the rising temperatures. The fashion world revamps itself for two prominent seasons, Fall and Spring, when designers present new collections around the world.

“Florals for spring? Groundbreaking,” says Emma Liut, then smiles her red lips, quoting the popular film The Devil Wears Prada.

Liut, a marketing student at Ryerson University, is dressed in painted-on skinny jeans (she is looking into buying a denim shirt to wear with them, another trend) and her mother’s button-down shirt, has volunteered at LG Fashion Week backstage and has a strong knowledge of fashion.

“I think we’re going to be seeing a lot more of the tights and leggings mixed with blazers and florals for spring,” she says. “We only get so much warm weather and should not have so much ‘overcrowding’ of the body, like fall scarves do. Look for loose, flow-y pieces.”

In an interview with Fashion Magazine, designer Diane von Furstenberg said,““Freedom—the trend of freedom through colour and prints. Colour is very good for me; I’m riding that wave right now. Imagine a garden in black and white!”

The most prominent trend for spring fashion is that of one’s personal style. Alex Fox, team lead of Ryerson University’s fashion event Serpentinata, has viewed all the collections of second and third year design students, which are a reflection of every individual.

“Its pretty unique to each student, for the eveningwear collections, (second years), they each designed a piece based on their own designs.”

Liut echoes this statement, “It’s important to stick to building yourself as a brand by how you dress. It’s your own personal style and who you are.”

Serpentinata takes place April 9 at Arcadian Court.
